Melrose Heights is a neighborhood off located of Millwood Avenue in downtown Columbia. Founded in 1900, this neighborhood has been named one of “America’s Best Kept Secrets” by This Old House magazine and exudes charm, character, and the ambiance of its historical origins.
There are a variety of different style homes in Melrose Heights, including some Tudor, craftsmen, and colonial revivals and many carpenter and bungalow styles. Melrose Heights has a very active neighborhood association that works to involve the community and neighbors in fun events throughout the year. In 2003 the neighborhood association voted to make Melrose Heights an Architectural Conservation District, and as a result, the neighbors share a sense a greater sense of unity as they take pride in maintaining their unique homes and immaculate gardens. Additionally, the association has recently started using a unique kind of neighborhood watch program that uses the internet to keep residents informed of safety alerts.
Although Melrose Heights maintains a low profile, the short five minute commute to downtown, affordable pricing, and close vicinity to some of Columbia’s best schools gives this neighborhood even more allure. Melrose Heights residents have the benefit of attending award winning Richland County District 1 Schools including Brennan Elementary School, Crayton Middle School, and A.C. Flora High School.
Downtown Columbia offers fun for every one of all ages. Just a few minutes away are the Congaree Vista and Five Points. The thriving Congaree Vista entertainment district has 60 art galleries and specialty shops as well as 40 restaurants and bars. The Five Points area, often known for being the chosen hang out spot for college students, has more to offer than people may think. There are great boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and bars with lots of personality.
Throughout the year Columbia also hosts many interesting cultural events such as the World Beer Festival, Columbia’s Blues Festival, Columbia’s International Festival, The Midlands Soap Box Derby, and much more. South Carolina State Fair is also held each year in the city during October. Right in the middle of the University of South Carolina’s campus are The Koger Center and the Colonial Life Arena both of which host numerous amazing concerts, performances, and many Broadway plays that come to town. Educational and interesting museums such as Edventure and the South Carolina State Museum are also excellent options for entertainment.
Even though Melrose Heights is located in the city, there are plenty of places to enjoy the great outdoors. Residents can venture to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden or the Cayce Riverwalk parks located along the Congaree River. The Congaree National Park, South Carolina’s only national park, is minutes away and a beautiful place for canoeing, bird watching, camping, hiking. Also, Lake Murray is only a 30 minutes drive and is a perfect “outdoor playground” where you can explore the outdoors with kayaking, boating, swimming, fishing, and much more!
