Earlewood is a historic neighborhood located in downtown Columbia, South Carolina’s state capital. Originally owned by the Geiger family, the Earlewood Neighborhood was named after the Columbia attorney John Earle who assisted in the acquisition of the land for the city.

During the 1800’s this area was primarily a farming area, and some homes are still in the traditional farm house style. Today, the houses found in Earlewood encompass many of the architectural styles of the past 150 years including farm houses, two-story Victorians, craftsmen bungalows, brick Shandon- style, ranches and new homes. In the 1990’s Earlewood saw a resurgence of new construction as new homes were built with the charm and character of older homes. Homes typically range in size from about 1200 square feet to 2500 square feet.

The Earlewood Community Citizens Organization (ECCO) was formed in 1977–one of the first neighborhood associations in Columbia. Some of the main goals of the very active ECCO include promoting community involvement and pride as well as maintaining the historical charm and character of the lovely neighborhood.

Residents of Earlewood attend award winning Richland County District 1 Schools, including Logan Elementary School, St. Andrews Middle School, and Columbia High School.

Earlewood Park, with large shade trees, rolling hills, and open grass, is within walking distance to the neighborhood. This park is one of the oldest and largest parks in the entire city and includes a community center, an amphitheater, a walking track, an 18 whole disc golf course, tennis courts, and two basketball courts. For additional outdoor recreation, residents can go to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden or the River walk parks. The Congaree National Park is just minutes away and is a beautiful place for canoeing, bird watching, camping, hiking and more.

As for entertainment, the recently revitalized Congaree Vista and Five Points Districts are great options. Both areas are known for their wide variety of restaurants and bars, as well as unique boutiques, specialty shops, and art galleries. Columbia is also home to the Koger Center and Colonial Life Arena which host numerous concerts and performances throughout the year, including Broadway Shows, the Ringling Brothers Circus, USC Sporting Events, and more!
