Columbia is South Carolina’s largest city, the state capital, and the central city in the Midlands area of the state. The downtown area is in Richland County and part of it extends into Lexington County. The city is located at the confluence of the Saluda and Broad Rivers, which intersect to the form the Congaree River. Downtown Columbia is also at the junction of highways I-77, I-26, and I-20 which allow for easy access to the beach (100 miles away) in addition to the mountains (130 miles away). Columbia is also near Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest training facility.
Named after Christopher Columbus, the city of Columbia was created in 1786 and officially became a chartered city in 1854. In 1801, South Carolina College was founded, which is now the thriving and spirited University of South Carolina. During the Civil War, Columbia was a perfect location for meetings among the Confederacy; however on February 17, 1865 much of Columbia was tragically destroyed by fire. In the early 20th century the city became a regional textile manufacturing center.
The US News and World Report named Columbia, SC 6th on its 2009 list of “America’s Best Affordable Places to retire”. But this is definitely not just a city for retirees; it has so much to offer for people of all ages. Revitalization of downtown Columbia took place throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s. The thriving Congaree Vista entertainment district has 60 art galleries and special shops as well as 40 restaurants and bars. The Five Points area offers more than what people often think of as just being the college students’ stomping grounds. There are great boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and bars with lots of personality.
Columbia also hosts many great events throughout the year. The city hosts the South Carolina State Fair each October. The Colonial Life Arena, which opened in 2002, brings many great concerts and shows to the city, and the Koger Center is an awesome place to go check out Broadway shows that come to town. For outdoor recreation, residents can go to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the River walk parks, the Congaree National Park and so much more.
